Chemo Infusion Monday

Good afternoon. We want to give you a brief update. There was some confusion with people yesterday because a few were under the impression that I was starting chemo on Friday. Unfortunately, the insurance approval did not go through until Thursday evening, thus changing the schedule. So if you got the message that I had chemo on Friday, I’m sorry I did not send an update out early enough and you got caught in the confusion.

I will be starting my new chemotherapy regimen tomorrow. Thankfully, Stanford is again able to work with my local oncologist in order for me to have the infusions in Fresno instead of making the drive up to Stanford. Jim and I both appreciate that!

As long as all goes well with this treatment, the next one will be in four weeks and we will continue that schedule until such time as we change treatment again or my blood work gives us a reason to wait on a treatment.

We know the possible side effects of the new chemotherapy. If they even make an appearance, most of them are “the usual” symptoms that you would recognize as “flu-like.” Aches, pains, fatigue, weakness, vomiting… you get the idea. There are also some side effects that are specific to this chemo drug, such as rashes and decreased utilization of calcium.
I have now added calcium to my daily mix of pills that I take. This is probably helpful in two ways: firstly, it will help fight the reduced levels from the chemo and secondly, it will help with bone health. Considering that the new tumors are growing in bone, I would imagine this extra calcium is a good thing to combat weak bones.

So, I will begin the treatment tomorrow. We will wait and see if any of these side effects make an appearance. I would be surprised if at least some of them don’t, based on previous treatment experiences. In fact, the doctor has already given me two prescriptions for different anti-nausea medicines. That tells me that I should be prepared for some stomach issues if nothing else.

As always, Jim and I both appreciate your thoughts, prayers and support. This is not a journey that I would wish on anyone, but if someone has to be on it, I hope they have an amazing support system like you have all given to me. I can’t express how much it means.

To finish on a positive note, I am having fun with some small projects around the house. I’m currently working on some decorations for our backyard. I will show you a picture when I get them done. I’m going to add a picture of my inspiration. Mine are not ready yet, but I will show you the finished product in a couple of weeks.
